Oelun

of the Qestir

Anger was washed away in the river along with any obligation.

A child welcomed into two worlds. A silver glint dulled with weariness. A girl selfish in her selflessness.

SUMMARY

Oelun is no stranger to the harsh realities of her savage homeland. Born to the blinding golden sun of the Steppe, she instead thrives in pale silver; ever faithful to her birth-tribe, she says not a word, observes from afar and grows ever more weary at what she sees.

Background

Oelun was concieved amidst a perilous political climate. Othard had been beseiged by the ever-expanding Garlean Empire, forcing her young mother's family to flee Hingashi and seek refuge in the Azim Steppe, abandoning the prominence they had gained over several generations.

The tribes there were distrustful, despite the teachings of their shared gods, and the displaced Raen had difficulty convincing the established tribes of their intentions using foreign words. Their actions, however, were respectful and fair, and it was not long before they caught the eye of who would later be Oelun's father, a Qestir.

When she was born to the Qestir tribe from a Raen mother and a Xaela father, neither spoke a word upon Oelun's arrival. Yet they held her tenderly, showing their love through soft touch and attentive care, and so Oelun grew in warm silence.

She watched the wars waged in the Steppe and imagined the greater world past the mountains. Intimidated though she may be, Oelun wished to learn. There was untapped potential within her, she could feel it, and it was not in her nature to leave such a thing be. Days into her adulthood, she packed her things and basked in the embrace of her parents before setting out to seek a foreign education.

The initial shock was not one she coped well with; so many words and desperate attempts at verbal communication tempted her to speak enough that she felt shamed and corrupted. In her alarm, she lost the trust she had in herself. The drastic measures she took as a result have remained ever since.

Even as a foreigner, she eventually gained access to an educational visa in Sharlayan in a mutual deal of cultural observation. It suited her just fine- the Sharlayan thirst for knowledge was something she took full advantage of all the way until her graduation. Astromancy heavy with power at her fingertips, she is bound to the island in a more ominous way than her homeland. Now, having moved on to a suitably knowledge-rich employment, it's merely a matter of balancing both worlds.

Intrigue

For a foreigner, Oelun has a remarkable level of belief in a particular Sharlayan political party. Their policies on the hoarding of knowledge, of outsiders not being worthy of such dangerous power, are ingrained in her mind as carefully as the knowledge that came with them.

Oelun was born and raised in Reunion despite the pallor of her scales and acts like it. It affects her demeanor in every way, from courting behavior to a staunch refusal to speak. She takes regular trips home to help patrol the markets during especially crowded nights and usually stays for several days afterwards.

Freshly graduated and thrust into a balancing act between old and new tradition, anything familiar will catch her attention and likely keep it. Even after a notable period spent in Eorzea and Hingashi, she still has trouble communicating.

Intrigue

Admitted, taught, and graduated from Studium on an air-tight (and thus mildly suspicious) educational visa, her skill with a starglobe far outweighs any training she received as a child in the Steppe. The conduit she uses is rarely seen outside of the island itself after the scandalous teachings in Ishgard, so you'd be hard-pressed to get her to give a demonstration.

As the child of a Raen mother, Oelun’s appearance stands out in the Steppe even with the patches of blue along otherwise white scales. While her mother’s clan now lives with the Malaguld as refugees, the Hinonishi clan was once a notable name in the trade of elaborate embroidery, known well in the markets of Hingashi.

Oelun is nothing if not well-travelled, though hardly for the sake of sightseeing. Rather than famous monuments or crowded cities, she can often be found in the fields and ruins of obscure villages, collecting data on some obscure flora’s growth or an animal’s migration pattern.

I currently work in Eastern Standard Time and prefer in-game scenes to Discord, but I'm not opposed to something out of the box. Several of my rp partners are in EU timezones, so I can accommodate that as well if necessary.
